Overview: Paris 1947.
Gaston Lafarge may have retired voluntarily from the French police force, but he has not lost his appetite for solving cases. He duly accepts the unexpected chance to return to Paris from exile to solve the case of the renowned publisher Robert Denoel. Denoel has been murdered, days before he is due to answer questions over collaborating with the Nazis during the Occupation.
Lafarge encounters a host of suspects, including Denoel’s charismatic mistress, Jeanne Loviton, and a senior civil servant and concentration camp survivor Pierre Roland-Levy.
The world-weary detective feels that little has changed since the Liberation, only the faces of those in power. He has the added problem of Rene Bousquet, his former superior during the Occupation, who organised the apprehension of Jews during the war. Bousquet may be in prison awaiting trial – but he is keen to settle accounts with Lafarge once and for all.
Lafarge, tenacious as ever, proceeds with the investigation, even when he discovers that someone has put a contract out on him.
Can he solve the murder – and survive himself?
