Overview: Judith loved Thomas Stainford. Once. Now she loathes the sight of him. Not because he’s disgraced for trifling with his sister in law and facing his own brother over the barrel of a duelling pistol in consequence. Not because his scheming threatens to ruin her betrothal to the man whose purse strings support her family. Certainly not because he’s been disinherited and is no longer the heir to his father the Earl of Penwick. She hates him because he left her to follow his brother and sister in law to the war in Spain.
Judith Hampton and Thomas Stainford should have made the perfect match. The attraction between them was evident to all, quite palpable. It didn’t take matchmaking by friends and relatives to push them together. Judith loved Thomas with the fervour and intensity that only a young girl in the throes of her first love can feel. Nothing could have altered the way she felt. Yet four years later she greeted his return from the Peninsular War with consternation that bordered on panic
The circumstances of his return influenced her of course. The liaison with his sister in law was only the latest in the string of scandals involving women that had marked his progress through Portugal and Spain. And Judith had no difficulty in believing the truth of it all too easily. After all he’d broken her own heart and accomplished her ruin in the space of only a few short weeks.
Judith’s own circumstances had altered over the years. She’d not taken Theodore Horsley’s courtship seriously at first. But the wealthy baronet had proved a generous friend to her wayward brother John. Theodore’s problem was that his family had no lineage. By contrast the Hamptons, flush with lineage, hadn’t enough money to sustain their estate or pay off John’s debts. So Judith, steeped in the importance of family and duty, decided with the selflessness of the innocent that marriage to Theodore was the solution that will save her family and lift the burden of worry from her ailing father.
Thomas threatened even this modest ambition by his return. Selfishly, without any thought for her predicament he sought to rebuild his derailed military career using his remaining connections at Horseguards. Regrettably this involved him appropriating the militia battalion that Theodore Horsley had paid to raise, and brought Thomas into county society where Judith cannot escape encountering him, however much she wishes to.
As Thomas drills his soldiers Judith and he strive to protect their family secrets and avoid each other as best they can. No matter how trapped Judith feels as she faces up to the demands of the man whose purse supports her family she will not turn to Thomas for help. With Thomas equally confused over drawing a line between pride and stubbornness, the course of their romance is ragged and stormy before Judith can be sure she’s managed to reform her rake.
