Prologue – Quantum Incident
This short novelette combines several stories that span more than a thousand years – a prologue that provides a glimpse into the dramatic events to come in the three-book Quantum series (Quantum Space, Quantum Energy and Quantum Time).

Tenth century, Moorish Spain. A young girl on her way home notices a shiny metallic object that was not there the day before — and may not even be from her world.

Flash forward to 2012. The long sought Higgs boson has been discovered at the Large Hadron Collider in Geneva, Switzerland. Scientists rejoice in the confirmation of quantum theory, but a reporter attending the press conference believes they may be hiding something.

Nala Pasquier is a particle physicist at Fermi National Laboratory in Illinois. She knows that the discovery made in 2012 opened a door. After years of work, she has produced a working prototype with capabilities that are nothing less than astonishing.

#1 – Quantum Space
High above the remote windswept plains of Kazakhstan, a Russian Soyuz capsule drops toward Earth. Onboard are two Russian cosmonauts and an American astronaut returning from the International Space Station. A strange shimmer in the atmosphere, a blinding flash of light, and the capsule vanishes in a blink as though it never existed.

Stress levels spike at the Russian space agency, Roscosmos, as evidence points to a catastrophic reentry failure. NASA fears they have witnessed another Columbia shuttle disaster. But more than an hour later, a communications facility in Australia picks up a voice transmission that sounds like one of the astronauts. The voice of a dead man?

In Washington, the National Security Advisor quickly pulls together a team to investigate. As they gather evidence, what first appeared to be a reentry tragedy could be something else and a classified government project on the cutting edge of quantum physics may hold the clues. With the astronauts’ lives on the line, there is little time to waste.

Daniel Rice is a government investigator, working for the president’s science advisor. Marie Kendrick is a NASA operations analyst. With help from Fermilab physicist, Nala Pasquier, they must track down the cause of what could be the most bizarre event in the history of human spaceflight. They each draw from their scientific knowledge as they plunge into the strange world of quantum physics, with impacts not only to the three missing astronauts, but to the entire human race.
