Every week we receive letters, phone calls, and e-mail that excoriate us for the opinions of our analysts, exannine in nninute detail our grammar and usage, express gratitude for our reports on meaningful issues, or extol the virtues of
their own political or personal philosophies. But the schoolteacher in Illinois; the chemist in California; the actor in New York City; and the lawyer in North Carolina
all have one thing in common. Call it the highest common denominator. Their correspondence invariably ends with “P.S. Love the puzzle.” In fact, one
midwestern gentleman said his horses chew more contentedly when our Puzzlemaster is on the air.
Will Shortz is a founding father of the Weel<end Edition Sunday family. Ten years ago Susan Stamberg, radio goddess, national treasure, and original host of this program, wanted a puzzle to be a part of the show. As the crossword puzzle is a given in Sunday newspapers, so an audio puzzle would be an integral part of our program. At first it was a game between Susan and Will. When I joined the
family in 1989, we invited listeners to play.
