Overview: Seeing the future can’t save her from the present.
In an alternate near-future, a post-war U.S. has separated along state lines into individual nations. Michigan houses a secretive facility called the Oracus, where Seers advise the nation’s Director by foreseeing the future.
Natalie (Tallie) Kowalczyk is Foretold, predicted by Seers to become one of them. At 18, she is ready to enter The Oracus at the top of her class. The public ceremony is derailed when the gates deny her entry. Humiliated and confused, Tallie is separated from her parents, stripped of her Elite status, and sent to an apprentice dormitory with Pedestrians—those who work skilled trades and are last to receive the nation’s limited resources.
Tallie believes her future is over until the nation announces a competition to fill the empty spot in The Oracus. Pedestrians with latent predictive abilities can enter for a chance to become a Seer, earning a coveted Elite status for themselves and their families. Desperate to reclaim her purpose, Tallie enters the competition under an assumed identity. Winning isn’t as easy as she expected when faced with her debilitating anxiety, competing against an old crush, and threats from the nation’s Director. Tallie discovers that the world of extrasensory abilities isn’t as narrow as she’d been taught.
Then the stakes rise to life or death.
Tallie has always lived under the weight of expectation—to achieve, succeed, make her parents proud. Can she push past the fear of failure to survive The Oracus Test, save her friends and parents, and choose her own future?
