Overview: Virgil Wells was the oldest lawman in the western territories, having been a lawman for his entire adult life. Now, Virgil and his stepsons, Zane and Cody, were the law in Wichita, Kansas.
With Virgil briefly out of commission from an injury, Zane captures an outlaw, Harmon Murphy, who was selling Mexican Army rifles to the Cheyenne. Then Zane went missing for days. Cody went to search for his brother. Cash Murphy, the fourteen-year-old son of the outlaw, came to Virgil, telling him of a man being held in a Mexican prison who needed rescuing. Virgil wondered if Cash was sincere or if this was a trick… but he wondered if it could be Zane. Virgil decided to trust the young boy and, against doctor’s orders, Virgil and Cash headed to Mexico.
After a daring rescue, Virgil, Cash, and the rescued prisoner crossed over from Mexico, barely escaping the pursuing Mexican army aboard a train that fortuitously appeared just when they needed it.
Injured and exhausted, the three men fell asleep. They awakened the next day and realized the train had stopped. Walking to the locomotive they noticed the locomotive was abandoned. The firebox was empty; there was no coal or wood and looked to have not been used for decades. They noticed two sets of bones in the locomotive and one set of bones in the caboose. They were only five miles from Wichita, so they decided to head home. The mystery of this Ghost Train would have to wait.
Virgil took a liking to young Cash and offered him the job of being his third deputy. At fourteen, Cash Murphy became the youngest deputy in the West. Months later, Virgil and young Cash set out to discover the mystery of the Ghost Train. Not only would they find the old locomotive, they also would learn its secret. He now realized why the spirits aboard the train had saved him.
