Overview: Arthur Gellon is in a state of panic. A well-known and respected businessman, Arthur has been plagued of late by the return of memories that he’d thought well buried and forgotten. Crimes he’d committed as a youth that could have placed him on death row now push productive thought away.
Even more distressing, someone knows about those past indiscretions, including the names of his victims and location where he hid the bodies. He’s been told he needs to commit new crimes if he wishes that horrible past to remain buried where he thought it would stay for the rest of his life.
He’d like to stand up to the blackmailer, but the vividness of his memories reminds him just how heinous the acts were, and he has little doubt what his fate will be should he attempt to resist the demands being made upon him. At times he wants to disbelieve what he knows is true. The acts of violence he clearly committed are so foreign to the man he is today.
It is too bad he doesn’t trust his instincts instead of his memory. The memories are real enough. They just aren’t his.
Meanwhile, on the other coast of the U.S. in the District of Columbia, a very attractive and capable young investigative reporter is given an assignment to report on the murder of a powerful Senator’s aide. Was the killing because of Greg Harris’s somewhat secretive sexual orientation, or was something more sinister behind the murder?
While Cindy’s efforts fare no better than those of the police in determining the motivation for the killing, she gains a personal connection with one of the Police detectives assigned to the case.
Almost by chance they begin to believe that there is more to the killing than everyone suspects, and that the death has touched the Senator in some way. Along with Nick Kalani’s partner, the reporter and the two detectives begin an informal investigation of their own, more to satisfy their curiosity than and real expectation they might uncover a real plot.
They couldn’t have realized how dangerous their modest probing could become, for a powerful Organization was behind the murder, and wants all probing into the affair to end. As a result of their efforts, people begin to die, and Cindy herself is targeted for removal.
Clues dry up and more people die, forcing them to travel across the country in hopes of locating a famous doctor who might hold the key to understanding what is happening. What they suspect is horrible enough, but falls far short of what the Organization is planning, and the project the secretive group has initiated.
