Overview: Dan Hollister is a cop with a drinking problem. It’s not an uncommon condition in his line of work. But few have had to deal with the heartbreak that Hollister has endured. A year earlier his wife and fifteen-year-old son were murdered by a hopped up meth addict during a home invasion. Arriving on the scene just as the perpetrator was running away, Hollister shot and killed him. The subsequent investigation – standard procedure in officer involved shootings – cleared Hollister of any criminal action.
A week later his best friend, also a cop, is shot to death in a downtown alley. There is no known motive and there are no suspects. Not until, that is, Vincent Stahl, a homicide detective with an unusual talent, comes up with a theory that Hollister had compelling reasons for wanting both his wife and his friend dead.
To Stahl the evidence is too convincing to ignore, and yet the brass aren’t interested in pursuing a case against a respected law enforcement officer with an excellent record. It seems the only way Stahl is going to prove his theory has merit is to conduct an unsanctioned investigation of his own. To that end, Lara Pike, a woman with a talent for telling lies, who happens to have an agenda of her own, might be Stahl’s only hope for validation.
But sometimes in life nothing is as it seems.
And no one is who you expect them to be.
