Overview: Colleen and Abbie Lewis are mother and daughter living in a small, lakeside town, and they are — oops! — about to become accidental crime solvers. The idyllic little town of Lakeland, where they live, is experiencing a rash of pretty nasty crimes. Between the murder of a local couple, the assaults perpetrated against local realtors, a sexual assault and murder in the vineyard owned by Colleen’s parents, and a series of burglaries that may or may not be drug-crime inspired, the local authorities have their hands full. Colleen and Abbie never mean to get involved — yet somehow that is exactly what keeps on happening.

Fortunately, Colleen and her family have been Lakeland residents for a very long time. An entire townful of people wants to keep this duo safe. That includes a couple of very different, extremely appealing men — and, a whole slew of dogs!

As a local area dog groomer, Colleen figures there can never be enough dogs — and this series is filled with a variety of canine friends. And as for men — well, there’s Diego, the sexy soccer coach, there’s Drew the local cop and lifelong friend, and there’s Bobby, the family friend who just may or may not be shady and breaking his grandmother’s heart. What’s a girl to do? With a novel happening in every season, this local town has some stuff going on. Like, love blooming all over the place.

This is going to be a year for Colleen and Abbie to remember. First, though, they have to live to tell the tale!

#1 – The Heart of Things
When a loose dog interrupts her daughter’s soccer match, small town dog groomer, Colleen Lewis, catches the dog and returns it to its home. There she discovers the murdered bodies of the dog’s owners. Overnight, she is misrepresented in the press as a witness to the crime, and Colleen and her daughter, Abbie, find themselves in the sights of a killer. Unable to sleep or to focus at work, Colleen starts looking for some sort of closure, and her attempts only put Abbie and herself in further jeopardy. At the same time, two very different men pursue Colleen — soccer coach, Diego Fuentes, and local cop, Drew Hayes. Diego is uber-sexy and Abbie thinks the world of him, but years ago, Drew was Colleen’s first kiss. Both men are appealing, and Colleen must wade through her feelings while trying to keep herself and her daughter alive until the killer is caught.

#2 – The Way of Things
A killer is targeting the female realtors of Lakeland. On a birthday kayaking adventure, Abbie and friends discover a woman, injured and floating in the lake, and to everyone’s horror, the woman is Anna, Colleen’s best friend. More attacks quickly follow, and it is Drew’s job to stop the killer. At the same time, Colleen becomes convinced that Gloria Sampson is being abused by her husband, Frank, and Colleen tries to help. Drew, though, only sees that Colleen has put herself in danger’s path, and he is furious. While the two of them attempt to resolve the tensions in their new relationship, Abbie steps in to ensure her mom’s happiness — even though with Drew in the family home, she has to share her mother in a way she never has experienced before.

#3 – The Best of Things
Abbie has been spending her early Autumn mornings working at Zara Vineyards, so she is with her grandfather and with Bobby De Luca when the body of one of Zara’s fruit pickers is discovered. Since Bobby has been sleeping with the victim, he becomes chief suspect for the crime, and the stress of finding Sabine’s body causes Charles to drop from a heart attack. Drew is too close to the family to be the investigating officer, but Officer Jimmy Grisham is keeping him in the loop. Then a second raped and murdered woman is discovered and tensions skyrocket. Colleen’s brother, Mark, returns from California to help out at Zara, and there are immediate sparks between him and Colleen’s pretty young assistant, Lexie. As much as she loves her brother and wants to be able to recommend him to her friend, there is no way to know if Mark is just in town for a short while or if he is home for good. Colleen and Drew are planning the wedding, but with the killer running loose and all the tension in the family, it really feels like some of the joy of the moment is being stolen. They are working together to weed out the killer while at the same time, Abbie does her best to cover for Bobby until he can be proven innocent. Everyone wants the same thing — for this killer to be locked up and all the people they love to be okay. Still, with the killer on the loose, tensions are higher than ever for the families of Lakeland.

#4 – The Merry Kind of Things
The wedding everyone in Lakeland has been waiting for is finally here! With the big event happening just before Christmas — at Zara Vineyard — Colleen and Drew have a host of last-minute preparations to make. The rash of increasingly violent robberies happening in Lakeland are not helping make the lead up to the big day any easier.

Since all her closest friends are affected by the series of crimes, Colleen feels like she is bouncing from one hospital visit to the next. Then Fur Face Salon itself is robbed, and neither Drew nor Sylvester are prepared to have the woman they both love injured without doing some damage of their own back. Drew suspects a drug connection to the crimes. With the wedding a few short days away, he is on the clock trying to prove it, though.

Abbie is excited about the wedding and cautiously optimistic about their family’s future. She also is in the full-on grip of her first crush. So much change is distracting, so it is a good thing she and Colleen have taken up self-defense classes. Sparring gives Abbie something to concentrate on other than all the changes coming to Lakeland.

With old friends back in town to celebrate, Colleen discovers a secret she badly needs to share. Now, if only she could find the right moment to do so…
