Overview: The Key is a re-imagining of Perrault’s Bluebeard, a story which has, for centuries, instilled chilling terror in the hearts of children and (if told correctly) adults.
But The Key is more than just a novelty story, it is a subtle study of organised religion, an attempt to dissect and begin to understand the avid adoration humanity bestows upon a god, goddess, or prophet who is, in most instances, cruel. And more often than not, simply absent. Eva Wright is a celebrity journalist, burnt out from a relationship gone sour as well as countless professional defeats. She is desperate to rekindle her career, as well as her sense of self, and it is at this juncture that she meets Dimitri Kron, a successful entrepreneur and infamous lady’s man. Eva manages to meet with Dimitri in a social environment, hoping to get the interview she needs to bolster her flagging career, but instead of the bombastic millionaire she had expected, she sees an entirely different side to the man the Media loves to hate. Dimitri is considerate of Eva, leading her to believe that she is charming, graceful and intelligent. All the things she has begun to feel are slipping away from her. Consequently, Eva falls in lust (if not love) and is invited to stay with Dimitri in his home. The catch, however, to an otherwise fairy-tale romance, is that if a girl wishes to have Dimitri, she must learn to share him. And Eva is forced to share him with the two women closest to her emotionally, her younger sister, as well as her best friend. Both women have been leading double lives, she discovers; acting out of complete normality with her, while they romp with Dimitri behind closed doors.
The relationship Eva shares with Dimitri becomes strained under these circumstances. And it only worsens as she starts to see an uglier side to him. He keeps the girls as agents to endear him to the public, he assigns them tasks they cannot possibly complete, and he displays intense disappointment in them when they fail him, as they were set-up to do. Worst of all, however, is the way the relationship shifts from the perspective of the women themselves. Eva begins to find herself using terms for Dimitri she is ashamed of even considering, and engaging in acts that make her feel used and filthy. With the addition of a strange tonic they all feel compelled to drink, the entire affair starts to reek of a cult to Eva, who is fast becoming Dimitri’s biggest disappointment. Through it all, however, despite everything, she does not wish to leave. And when Dimitri offers her a chance to redeem herself in his eyes, she snatches at it: the little key on a tether.
A key which opens a door she must never enter.
