Overview: To say that Chef Rachel Wilson wasn’t one hundred percent convinced when her paramedic husband Jerry predicted the start of the zombie apocalypse and began making preparations–stockpiling MREs and other necessities while fortifying their bolt hole–would be an understatement. More like five percent willing to humor and support her husband and ninety-five percent wanting to shake some sense into him. But being married is about compromises, so Rachel takes the survival kit he makes for her and forgets about it until one night at the end of a catering gig thirty-five miles from home, Rachel realizes she’s living in the real life apocalypse. If she learned anything from years working in kitchens, it’s that crying about spilled milk—or dinner guests that suddenly turn into zombies—doesn’t get the job done. She may not have what Jerry would think of as a typical apocalyptic skillset, but she’s a former Olympian with excellent conditioning, a roll of razor sharp knives, and a will to survive. She’ll need all that and more to fight her way through murderous drug addicts, psychotic conspiracy theorists, and one or two zombies as she tries to make her way home to her husband and their beloved German Shepherds. Little does she know, Jerry is having his own problems. It’s said that the devil is in the details. For the apocalypse that means big details like food, water and shelter. But also little ones, like timing. In spite of an encyclopedic knowledge of zombie lore and all the preparations he and his fellow preppers have made, he badly misjudges the speed with which the zombie plague would burn through the world’s population and finds himself trapped in a hospital janitor’s closet by the first zombies he comes across. But being a paramedic is about doing the job no matter how tired or scared you are. So Jerry makes a start by getting rescued by a badass teen fencing champion with as much zombie knowledge as he has, plus some skills picked up from her cop dad and military brothers. All he has to do is drop her off at her house before heading home to save his wife. It’s said that love conquers all. It will take a lot more than love for the Wilsons to fight through, not only zombies and a world without the things they’ve come to depend on—Google Maps, telephones, police, civil order—but crazed humans and an ever increasing cast of stranded people who either need their help or want to kill them—to make it back to each other. Each will have their strengths tested and weaknesses exposed along the way. And they’ll learn how an apocalypse brings out the best, and the worst in themselves and their fellow humans.
