The Hummingbird House Series by Jane Harvey (1-3)
Requirements: epub reader, 586 kb
Overview: Jane Harvey is a pen name. ‘Jane’ crafts fun fiction for the thinking woman, where she enjoys exploring unexpected friendships and writing happy endings. This is lucky, because in real life her (prize-winning) fiction is a little bleaker. She was born and raised on the beautiful island of Jersey, CI, and lives with two males and a dog.
Genre: Romance
1. The Landlord of Hummingbird House – April needs somewhere to live, and peace and quiet to heal her wounds. The tenants of Hummingbird House have other ideas.
When April moves into Hummingbird House, she is intrigued by her mysterious landlord, Dai.
With a bruised heart and a distinct lack of furniture, she spends the summer getting to know the other occupants. As she smartens up her home and makes peace with her recent past, she befriends Paul, a solitary ex-chef, and Betty, an elderly lady who lives in the basement flat.
But Hummingbird House holds many secrets, and the relationships of the tenants are not as straightforward as they seem. April learns some shocking truths one eventful night, and realises that victims and villains can look the same.
2. Buttercups in the Basement – 1967: the summer of love and the year Betty moves into her first home.
Independent. Open. Inexperienced. She is excited to be living with her new husband, William, and committed to returning Hummingbird House to its former glory.
But when she invites captivating new tenants into her home and settles into married life, her world begins to transform in ways she could never have imagined.
She thought she was on a journey toward domesticity and devotion – but her experiences that summer prove to be anything but traditional.
3. Searching for Sandra – In 1968, the summer of love seems long gone. Hummingbird House has a new batch of residents, and Betty is settled in a comfortable – though unexpected – form of domestic bliss. Life may not have worked out as planned, but she is determined to make the best of it.
Yet as the months go on, she realises she still has much to learn. With one tenant missing and another threatening to sweep her off her feet, she begins to worry that her happy home could fall around her once more.

In 2022, Betty has established a comfortable routine. She weeds the front yard. Listens to the radio. Makes cake. At the age of 83, she knows what – and who – she likes, plus just how much she can manage before her arthritis begins to complain.
She lives by simple rules gleaned from hard-learnt lessons:
Keep an open mind and a well-stocked pantry
Sometimes meddling is not such a bad thing
But when an old friend finally makes an overdue appearance, those guidelines start to take on a new meaning.
Just how much should we do for absent friends? And when is it right to take a chance on love?
