Overview: Willa Jones, a 38 year old recluse, living in an isolated shack near a river bed, inadvertently appears on an Australian reality TV show, The Hermit Next Door. She captures the world’s attention with her vintage songs, unique interpretations served up in a voice that seems superhuman. She has a mysterious backstory and the media are scrambling.
For Executive Director, Jack Gilmore, it’s been a long time since he’s had to persuade a client to sign a music contract using little more than his charm and charisma. Those tools of the trade had been packed away long ago. But she’s rejected everyone else, the usual leverage—money, fame, prestige—not having the slightest effect. She only wants to be left alone, live an anonymous life. Her scars run deep—she wants no part of the success he, or anyone else, can offer.
When the full force of a ferocious media thrusts her into the protection of Jack, she records an album, all the while hoping the shame of her past will remain undiscovered so that she can return to her inconspicuous life when the attention blows over.
As Jack and Willa strip back the layers of each other’s imperfection, they discover a depth of feeling that surprises them both. But when the media reveal her shocking past, there is not a single place left to hide. Betrayed by Jack and her family she must learn to stand alone and accept the life that is now before her.
This is a story about fame and how sometimes, despite everything, it chooses its own champion.
