Overview: Diana watches a childhood acquaintance leave the Northern California Art Institute in shame. She raises her eyebrows in reproof, knowing Emelie leveraged family connections to claim her residency, but produced nothing of merit. Without the same latitude for failure, Diana returns to her job and focuses on The Institute’s new crop of artists. She singles out James, a lean painter from upstate New York. Their summer fling looks promising, but Emelie returns, and a murder devastates the artistic community. When the authorities arrest James for the murder, Diana secures his freedom from jail, but he has little interest in her romantic overtures.
