Overview: An orphan who aged out of the system, Olivia Dunn is happily alone. Unfortunately, that’s also what makes her the perfect candidate to save the world…because no one will miss her.

After being followed for weeks, Olivia tries to figure out who the red haired man is that’s been stalking her. Finally, he approaches her and introduces himself as Drake, a being from another dimension. He tells Olivia that the wall between dimensions is crumbling because humans have become so wicked and that she is the chosen one to save humanity and keep the wall intact. But before she can save the world, she must go through training and trials to prove she is worthy.

At school, Olivia is awarded a coveted internship by her favorite teacher, Professor Mark, which could lead to the career of her dreams in forensic science. The work load for the internship is significant and the constant pull of school and training begins to wreak havoc on Olivia’s life. Further complicating things is Olivia’s boss, Marjorie, who is bent on driving Olivia nuts. Between Marjorie and Olivia’s co-worker, Bernadette, it makes it impossible for Olivia to hold her tongue. One day at work, she makes a nasty comment to Bernadette that Marjorie overhears and Olivia is fired on the spot. Without her job, Olivia can’t afford rent, food or any of the small luxuries she was once used to.

Later at her apartment, she finds her drunken neighbor beating his dog. She sneaks the dog into her apartment and nurtures him back to health, naming him Sam.

Without a job, Olivia can’t pay her rent and within weeks, she and Sam are homeless and living on the streets. School suffers even more as Olivia deals with the mounting responsibility of Sam, schoolwork and training in addition to trying to find a job. However, training with Drake provides her with the opportunity to see parts of the city that she has never seen before including the abandoned buildings at the wharf. One of those buildings is perfect to squat in and in the upstairs loft Olivia makes a home for herself and Sam. Eventually Olivia finds a job in a local coffeehouse earning money for food so that she and Sam don’t have to eat out of garbage cans. With her life becoming more stable, she begins to make inroads into excelling at training while keeping up with her schoolwork.

It isn’t long before the training and Drake’s trials overtake her life once again and she finds herself hanging on for dear life. Drake is upset that she is still in school and Professor Mark is upset that she’s been missing class and internship meetings. When the time for her final trial arrives, her life goes over the precipice. Professor Mark warns her if she misses another meeting or test, she’s out of school and she’s off the internship.

At the final trial, Olivia finds herself face to face with the Council of Kings, a group of kings that oversee and rule the dimensions. To win, she must kill Simon, another being like Drake, who has been accused of sowing seeds of hate in the heart of humanity. During the fight, Simon gains the upper hand and goes in for the kill. By this time, Olivia is tired and beaten and she’s given up and accepted death but then she hears the town clock and realizes that she has missed another test and another internship meeting which means she’s out of school and dropped from the internship. Fury takes over and she turns the tables on Simon, killing him.

Completing the final trial means that she is the chosen one to save the world and she begins her quest for the redemption of humanity. Surprisingly glad that she is no longer in school, she accepts her new life and what it will mean for her future. Her future as well as Sam’s.
