Daris is a baker’s son, living in the city of Taraken who wishes to move up in a world where such a dream is impossible. Despite his limitations, he finds joy in the love of his youth, Crystania. But joy turns to grief when she rejects his marriage proposal, and instead selects a husband who Daris has no chance of competing with. Redwin, a noble, leader of the Taraken Guard, and Daris’ childhood nemesis becomes Crystania’s fiancé.
To heal his broken heart, Daris ventures into the wilderness in search of a natural balm for his wounds. But what he finds in those woods is anything but natural. In the undefined territory in which Daris finds himself, there is something in the woods. Something that takes note of Daris’ anguish. A giant creature, one of the Offspring, is enticed by Daris’ misfortune to reveal itself and set its plans in motion. The giant soothes Daris and offers him a powerful tool which can turn Daris’ dreams into a reality.
What Daris doesn’t know is those dreams come at the cost of nightmares, and it’s the people of Taraken who will suffer. Once Daris learns the truth behind the creature and the tool, it’s far too late for him to stop what has been set in motion. Daris refuses to sleep or to dream, because when he does, the creatures torment him. The Offspring and its pets loom in the dream world, awaiting Daris, because each time Daris dreams, he provides an opportunity for darkness to invade the waking world.
