Overview: A detailed description of the naure of covenants lays the background for insights into the glory of the New Covenant. The New Covenant furnishes eschatological closeness to the presence of God. The blessings of all divine covenants prior to the New Covenant lie stored up in Christ. It is in the New Covenant that all the blessings of the previous covenant are revealed in their full eschatological reality.
We may draw near to the presence of God, not in a cultic sense, but in prayer and worship. The New Covenant has made available to believers "a better hope" by which we draw near to God. God’s new people have secured the assurance of a quality of access to and relationship with God that were not possible under the Old Covenant Levitiacal System.
Through Jesus’ definitive sacrifice, believers have received the right and authorization of access into the presence of the living God. The way into God’s presence is pervaded with the incorruptible freshess of the New Covenant, which believers participate in. It is a qualitatively new path into God’s presence.
Jesus is the mediator of this glorious New Covenant, which was established and divinely legislated upon qualitatively superior promises far exceeding the Old Testament promises. As the mediator of the New Covenant, he operates in our hearts by the power of an indestrctible life to prepare us for God’s presence in the heavenly sanctuary, and fits us for the realization of the goals of the New Covenant. He is the person and the medium in which the disposition of God is made effective and imparted to humankind.
God’s purposes is reveled in the covenants that he enacted with human beings in the course of history. These divine covenant were vehicles for man to enter into God’s purposes. They define the inter-personal, intimate, love-relationship that God has always intended to have with humankind. Through the divine covenants God releases his blessings and divine power for man’s total blessing and enjoyment.
The New Covenant that Jesus ratified in his blood was the long awaited New Covenant of Jeremiah 31:31-34. This New Covenant is the disposition rooted in the eternal purposes of God for humankind’s total blessing. Through the enactment of hte New Covenant, humankind has been reconciled unto God to experience the glory of his being and worship him as LORD and king over all.
