1. Fatal Decision
Gus Freeman is 61 years old. The retired Detective Inspector lives in a village on the outskirts of a West Country town that lies approximately ten miles from the Roman city of Bath.

Freeman has spent the past 3 years tending his allotment. As he surveys his handiwork sitting outside his garden shed he ponders his night-time reading. He’s a fan of Kierkegaard the existentialist philosopher.

Gus’s wife, Tess, died from a brain aneurysm six months to the day after his retirement. He is still coming to terms with his enforced solitary existence.

His old boss wants Gus to head up a Crime Review Team investigating cold cases. The trips to the allotment would be curtailed. His musings would be clouded by old witness statements and freshly unearthed clues… the hunt would be on.

Freeman wonders whether his superiors really need his old style methods. Is the request out of pity; to occupy his mind with fruitless digging into cases their best young brains failed to crack?

Gus can’t resist the chance to enter the fray for one last hurrah. In this first case the team tackle the brutal murder of Daphne Tolliver in June 2008. The sixty-eight-year-old widow was killed while walking her dog, Bobby in woodland close to her home. Despite the efforts of detectives at the time no suspects were ever identified. A reconstruction of Daphne’s last known moments on TV five years later yielded nothing. Gus Freeman and his new team appear to have a tough nut to crack for their first case.

2. Last Orders
Gus Freeman now heads up a newly-formed Crime Review Team charged with investigating cold cases that puzzled his former colleagues. Gus is assisted by:
DS Alex Hardy – a police pursuit motorcyclist currently confined to a wheelchair as he recovers from a high-speed accident. Alex is desperate to return to active duty.
DS Neil Davis – a bright young detective whose family members have served in the Wiltshire force for generations. His father, Terry took early retirement in 2012 and a hasty exit to Marbella hinted at a shady past.
Lydia Logan Barre – at twenty-five, this is the first job for the forensic psychologist graduate. Attractive, outspoken and fiercely competitive. She believes feathers were designed to be ruffled.

Gus soon found his feet after three years in retirement. A murderer awaits sentencing and another cold case file has landed on his desk.

‘Last Orders’ follows the case of Trudi Villiers, a 26-year old barmaid murdered as she walked home from the Ring O’Bells pub in October 2003. Trudi may have been a good-time girl with a string of lovers, but she was someone’s daughter and Gus wants his team to find the truth about what happened to her on that fateful night. Gus Freeman shows a dogged determination to hunt down the killer in a complex police procedural with a shocking final twist.

3. Pressure Point
Gus Freeman’s Crime Review Team has two successful cold case investigations behind them. Will it be third time lucky? The victim’s profession might make it hard to find someone to talk.

In their most recent case, DS Neil Davis’s father, Terry, came under the microscope. Was the former detective responsible for sending an innocent man to prison? Or did he follow orders from a superior officer? DS Alex Hardy continues his recovery from his motorcycle accident and awaits news on whether he can take a more active role in the job he loves. Lydia Logan Barre grows closer to Alex and reveals the secret behind her reasons for abandoning her theatrical ambitions and joining the police.

Laura Mallinder left home for work on Sunday, 12th June 2011. She walked to ‘Gentle Touch’, a massage parlour in Broadgreen, Swindon. Her boss, Maggie Monk, discovered her body later that evening. Laura, twenty-seven years old, sustained fatal stab wounds to her back.
