Overview: W.J. Orion is a figment of someone else’s imagination, but that makes him no less real to his readers. A writer of Young Adult science fiction, and aspiring airplane and firetruck, WJ lives in rural New Hampshire in a house by the river with his lovely wife, and two fierce daughters, who are both under the impression he is a jungle gym to be climbed on with great regularity. In his spare time he enjoys playing Dungeons & Dragons, Gloomhaven, reading books of all genres and subjects, drinking enough coffee to fly the plane he’s aspiring to be to Jamaica and back (for more coffee) and taking care of the house that gives his family a home.
Genre: Fiction > Sci-Fi/Fantasy
1. The Phone
The invaders came down to Earth in their ships, and multi-legged battle armor and we had no way to stop them from taking the water. Made sense. They looked like massive crabs, after all. The war was over in days.
Now, those left behind eke out a parched existence in the scorched rubble, avoiding the hunter-killer teams of crabs as they scour Earth for whatever they deem valuable.
Sixteen year old Yasmine Whitten is an expert at navigating the wastes; born into this world, she not only survives; she thrives. But she’s got a secret; her mother’s old cell phone.
Kept intact for 13 years of alien invasion, and kept charged by a tiny solar panel, these two relics of a dead-world give her sanity, and a host of tools that allow her to stay ahead of the scavengers, both human and crab alike. It’s a flashlight and a camera, and when she can’t sleep, she can comfort herself in the cold desert by looking at pictures of her mother and father, and by reading their old text messages to one another. She’s doing well enough, for a teenager on her own in a ravaged world. Until the phone rings.
2. The Nexus
The phone rang, and Yasmine answered it, sending her into the ruins of the city to find a young man and rescue him from the Monoliths, a ruthless gang that had taken him prisoner.
But it wasn’t quite what she expected. The Monoliths weren’t ruthless, they were good people, led by an uncle she never knew she had, and Trey, the young man who reached out to her on her mother’s phone wasn’t even a man at all. He was an alien, and worse yet, one of the crabs that took all the water, and destroyed Earth.
But alliances were made, friendships forged, and now, in the wake of their victory against the crabs in Shantytown, Yasmine and her uncle The Baron are going on a journey no human has ever undertaken; They are heading to The Nexus, the center of all galactic civilization, and the one place they can find help to take Earth’s water back. But that’ll mean war. Interstellar war. Yasmine’s war.
