Overview: England’s foremost writer on military questions describes and criticizes the progress British rearmament has made and suggests what remains to be done. He also discusses the strategic situation of England and of her “forward positions” — France, the Low Countries and Switzerland. Liddell Hart has long advocated a purely defensive war as the best for Britain, one in which men and matériel would be conserved as far as possible and in which no troops would be sent to the Continent. In the present war the British High Command has thus shown itself in accord with only part of his teachings.
