Overview: Pushcart Prize nominee, Freya Pickard is the quirky, unusual author of The Kaerling series, an epic fantasy set in the strange and wonderful world of Nirunen.
A cancer survivor, she writes mainly dark fantasy tales and creates expressive poetry in order to rest the prose side of her brain. Her aim in life is to enchant, entertain and engage with readers through her writing.
She finds her inspiration in the ocean, the moors, beautifully written books and vinyl music (particularly heavy metal and rock). Her most recent relaxation techniques to get her through lockdown include hatha yoga and painting landscapes and monsters in watercolour.

#1 – Silver Fire
What starts as an innocent quest to follow the unicorn’s trail, turns into a sinister nightmare.
“I was so happy to find a book that truly captivated my imagination from beginning to end.” K Johnstone
Banished from their village, Otta, and her twin brother Erl, (who has lost his memory), must stay ahead of those who seek to kill them.
Learning how to follow the unicorn’s trail and deal with her brother’s dark side, Otta must keep them both safe as she attempts to follow the commands of a shrineless god.
#2 – Ambassador
Trapped in Aura Vere, the twins must survive, without being discovered by the kaerlings.
“I simply adored reading Ambassador and look forward to the sequel!” C Messelodi
In a case of mistaken identity, Otta is assumed to be a kaerling ambassador and finds refuge in Aura Vere.
The shrineless god instructs Otta to find out about the mythical unicorn in Aura Vere’s library, but, as her fascination with the kaerlings increases, her studies decline.
When it becomes clear that the kaerlings are aware of Otta’s presence in the city, she and Erl must find a way of leaving in secret, before the foreign ambassadors find her.
#3 – An Ancient Song
Escaping Aura Vere and the kaerlings under cover of the Suryan Exodus, Otta discovers a dark side to her character.
“This story had me feeling close to Otta and I felt her discomfort as though she was my friend.” C Birmingham
Otta’s internal conflict makes for an uncomfortable journey as her brother Erl finds his loyalties tested to the extreme.
When the twins are banished from the Suryan wagons, they find themselves in a race against time to find the unicorn’s trail as one of the kaerlings pursues Otta through her thoughts.
