On September 1, 1859, an enormous flare erupted from the sun and approximately 18 hours later directly hit the Earth. Aurorae were seen around the world, as far south as the Caribbean, and were brighter than the full moon. Miners in the Rocky Mountains awoke and rose, thinking it was morning. Telegraph systems all over Europe and North America failed, nearly electrocuting some operators.
In July, 2012, an equally massive coronal mass ejection crossed Earth’s orbit, but missed the planet. Had it hit, Earth’s electrical infrastructure would have been destroyed, the effects on civilization unguessable, one estimate of the damage coming in at over fifty trillion in today’s dollars and decimating the population.

In the near future, Earth is struggling to build its first interstellar starship under the great organized effort, the Dani Project. R tells the story of Brian, a former hacker and PhD in AI systems, who seeks answers to the cause of his psychological issues, somehow linked to his mysteriously altered records and Dani. While on Mars, following a solar flare, a powerful AI named Rcturus is dangerously malfunctioning, threatening to bring war between Earth and the red planet.

The story of the Dani Project continues in S, with Brian and Kooky, Lei and Rcturus, Alfie and Solon. In this second volume, Brian swears to never hack again after his recent disaster, but after being hauled away from Dani Navigation by two men in suits, nevertheless finds himself seeking the help of the enigmatic Percherons. On Mars, flare-damaged Rcturus grows ever more erratic and doesn’t trust Lei with what he is doing inside the intelligence stronghold NCAC. He seems to be judging humanity, but whether they are found evil or flawed, Lei fears the same sentence will be found. New threads, new twists, all building to one of the greatest and darkest climaxes in the series as the two great AIs of the world clash. Brian may be able to tip the scales, but is he on the right side? And can the world survive?
