Overview: In 1832, an American student in Paris was legally blackmailed to search for the “Crimson Heirlooms” – for a period of no less than five years, upon pain of death. There were precisely two, as defined by the High Court of France. The first was a priceless necklace called the Cross of Nantes. The second was less tangible. It was, “the devil’s song, as he danced across the blood-drenched hills of the Vendée Militaire.”
Both were found.
In the first act of the search for the mysterious heirlooms, we follow two distinct timelines. The first; starting in 1776 in Nantes, France; involves their unknowing creators: Xavier Traversier, the hard, driven scion of a dying house; the Guerrier family, black Métis of Saint-Domingue – Féroce, a fearless soldier, and his twins, Guillaume, a warrior-poet, and Estelle, a devout Catholic in a brutal world; and the wealthy Cœurfroids – Maurice, a plotting Freemason, and his beautiful, willful daughter Jeannine.
The second timeline begins in Paris in 1832 and involves Jake Loring, an American legally blackmailed by the sphinxlike Monsieur Tyran to search for the two Crimson Heirlooms. Jake must sift through the rubble of the past and discover how and why these seemingly random people, from so long ago, interacted, lived and died in order to discover clues to the true meaning behind his search – and why he, specifically, was forced to it.
