The portrayal of the events leading up to the Norman conquest of England is evenhanded and factual. The attention to detail is astounding; the sense of place and time soaks every page. Even though we know this leads to the 1066 Conquest of the British Isles by the Normans, the suspense keeps us riveted to the page. Georgette Heyer deserves as much fame for such historical works as for her delightful comedies of manners, or her Golden Age detective stories.
