Overview: Russell Robert Winterbotham, born on August 1, 1904 in Salina, Kansas, was a newspaperman and author.
While writing, Winterbotham’s full-time job was fiction editor for Scripps-Howard NEA news service. He was also the author of instructional pamphlets and several Big Little Books. He wrote crime, science fiction and western stories. Using the pseudonym J. Harvey Bond, he wrote the science fiction novel The Other World; and writing as Franklin Hadley, the science fiction novel Planet Big Zero. He also wrote scripts for Fred Harman’s western comic Red Ryder.
For a period in the 1940s, he created several tales for the Whitman Publishing Company (generator of the Big Little Books and other series for children), writing at least sixty Big Little Books for the firm, including the Maximo the Amazing Superman sequence beginning with Maximo the Amazing Superman as R.R. Winterbotham, about a Mutant Superman who performs good deeds. As the author of various Comic strips throughout his career (he retired in 1969), he initiated Chris Welkin, Planeteer in 1951 and scripted it into the 1960s.
His return to sf around 1952 led to several exercises in Genre, beginning with The Space Egg, about an Invasion of Earth.
Russell Robert Winterbotham died on June 9, 1971 in Bay Village, Ohio
