1. The Youth
Separated from his family, his homeland and his childhood sweetheart, Daniel, a Judean youth of noble lineage, is exiled to Babylon, where his captors hope to use his talents at the Royal court.
What will eventually become of the youth – as he is subjected to grueling trials and tests – neither he nor his captors can even imagine…
Shlomo Kalo’s masterpiece of Biblical literature, THE CHOSEN, is being republished in three volumes. Kalo, one of the most prolific writers in Israel and a nominee for the Nobel Prize in Literature, brings to new life the themes and spirit of the Biblical story of Daniel in this lively, dramatic epic novel. His masterwork of storytelling weaves together the themes of faith, friendship, betrayal, love stronger than death, and redemption.
The first installment, Book 1 THE YOUTH, gives an account of Daniel’s early years – from his childhood in Jerusalem, the cradle of his spirituality and character, to his young adulthood in Babylon, when he is sent to his first duty at Nebuchadnezzar’s Royal court.
2.The Prophet
In THE PROPHET, the figures in the Babylon court who have taken to Daniel – or envy and hate him – come to the fore. His counsel is sought by those in power, including Nebuchadnezzar himself. Daniel is challenged by many things: the affections of Adelain, the daughter of a high commander; the revolt being hatched by the small Jewish community in Babylon; and by news of a potentially disastrous plot to rise up against Babylon being planned far away in the court of his homeland, Judea.
Daniel, with the trust he has gained, is allowed to bring his sweetheart, Nejeen to Babylon, and ultimately, four weddings take place in Babylon for Daniel and his three friends.
Book II ends in rebellion in Judea and Nebuchadnezzar’s demand for death for any who do not kneel to his statue, resulting in a dramatic fate for Daniel and his friends.
3. A Man Much Loved
At the start of A MAN MUCH LOVED, Nebuchadnezzar’s army, after a long siege, takes Jerusalem again, this time destroying the Temple and much of the city. Daniel later learns his family has been killed, as well. He retains his powers as advisor in Babylon, bringing dream reading and counselling to Nebuchadnezzar himself. After Nebuchadnezzar dies, however, his weak son takes the throne and the situation deteriorates. Among the many trials he faces, Daniel passes a test in the den of lions.
In a dramatic climax, the visions Daniel sees are explained to him. One of the prophecies of a new day for Jerusalem comes to pass, and his and his people’s exile draws near to its end.
