It’s set in an alternate London where music has been effectively weaponised. A vast instrument known as the Carillon has been constructed. It plays at Matins and Vespers, sings of past catastrophe, and prevents all who hear it from forming new memories. This insidious mass amnesia keeps the masses duped and narcotised and readily exploitable by the elite. Not that Simon Wythern knows anything about all that. He arrives in London a tabula rasa, but slowly begins to remember facets of his past and is drawn to others who resist the baleful, totalitarian influence of the music. It does take a while to adjust to the atmosphere Smaill creates, but over the long haul her world-building is as unsettling as it is poetic.
