Overview: DON’T EVER GO ACROSS THE BRIDGE. IF THEY CATCH YOU ON THE OUTSIDE, THEY WILL KILL YOU.
The Huldufolk, or Hidden People, lived in Iceland’s folklore, much as the leprechaun lived in Ireland. They were the much-feared, little people with great magical powers. They lived mostly underground or in the rocks. Some believed that they even lived in the air drifting along to wherever the wind would carry them.
Then there were stories of Huldufolk who left Iceland stowed away on ships and came to America. They chose Colorado as their home because of the mountains and rocks and used their magical powers to build their city, Alfheim, which was invisible to all others.
So that they could walk among the outsiders, they used their power to appear physically normal, something that they would live to regret. Other than being super-powerful, magical, and not believing in government or religious control, they were much like the outsiders or the normal people. They were invisible to most and had the ability to live forever. The normal people were called the outsiders and they were subject to time which gave them a lifespan.
This story is told from different viewpoints. One is from a young man, Shannon, who lives with the outsiders and another is from a young woman, Nia, who loves him, but is one of the Huldufolk.
Her home is Alfheim, named after a utopian, magical, invisible place. Shannon’s is in the Colorado mountains. Their homes are separated by an invisible bridge. Once she crosses the bridge to where Shannon lives, she enters the world of time. The world of the outsiders. Dystopia. The exact opposite of everything she knows to be true and where she can become contaminated and not only lose her magical powers, but her life as well.
