Overview: Hugo Dunwoody is a young police officer and Oxford graduate on the fast-track to the senior ranks of the Met. Recently promoted to Detective Sergeant, he is assigned to Croydon, South London, in the aftermath of the riots and looting of early August 2011. From day one he is singled out for special attention: ridiculed as ‘silver spooned’ by his peers, feted as the future of the police service by the top brass.

Sherwin Franklin, small time drug dealer, DJ and neighbourhood nuisance is found seriously injured in his flat on the Bevan estate. Soon another dealer, Vince Mason, is murdered nearby. Croydon police fear a violent turf war between the gangs whose drugs Franklin and Mason dealt. Hugo is assigned to the investigation under his boss, DI Denise Burton. The killing spreads with criminal gangs mounting revenge attacks on local and other rivals that they suspect of attacking them. Hugo suspects more than rival drugs gangs targeting each other’s dealers. But Burton disagrees.

After a public outcry about drug and gun crime and under intense media criticism, the Met. crack down on the gangs. When a raid on an illicit drugs warehouse goes horribly wrong, Hugo throws away the rule book and wins the respect of his colleagues in a vicious fight with gang members.

The investigation takes Hugo and Burton to other parts of the UK, back in time to the Falklands War and into the very heart of Government in Whitehall, where they finally learn that the truth is more sinister than either of them could ever imagine.
