Overview: The Aye Witness is a “coming of age” story in the late sixties about a murder in a small town in upstate New York. A love triangle ends in a murder, with one witness.
Steve and Chris are best friends in high school, playing football together. Emily is a cheerleader and Steve’s steady girlfriend. However, one night he brings another girl home, and her panties remained in Steve’s car. The girl’s boyfriend finds out and to save Steve from being beaten up by the boyfriend and his buddies, Chris intervenes and sets up a duel, using fists, between Steve and the boyfriend out on a country road. The dual happens at midnight not far from Frank’s trailer. Steve gets savagely beaten and Chris ends up taking him to Emily, because he doesn’t know where else to take him. Steve recovers from this injury and goes onto Syracuse University to play football, but eventually this injury comes back and ends up ruining his football career.
Steve ends up leaving college and goes to Vietnam, but not before marrying Emily. While Steve is away in Vietnam, Emily and Chris become involved. Ultimately, there are plans for another duel, but this time with guns.
Small town politics influence the outcome of the murder. Chris’s father is the largest employer in town. There are two bars in the town, Bill’s and Joe’s. Joe’s Bar and Grill is where all the political decisions are made in the town, because it is frequented by the firemen, the mayor etc. Bill’s is frequented by the alcoholics and college kids.
