Requirements: PDF Reader | 24 MB
Overview: Japanese brush painting has achieved enthusiastic acceptance throughout the Western World in recent years. It has a deceptive simplicity, for the artist uses no unnecessary lines. Even the omission of certain lines is intentional. Each stroke and dot is alive with meaning, expressing the vitality of an object as well as it’s form. Takahiko Mikami, founder of the Japanese Art Center in San Francisco, and Jack McDowell, an authority on Japanese art, describe a particular style of Japanese brush painting know as sumi e (sumi, black ink; e, picture). An art form seven hundred years old, it is distinguished by it’s plainness of color, it’s uncluttered lines, and it’s simple grace. Practical introduction in the art of sumi e begins in familiarizing the student with the materials – the paper, the brush, the ink stone – showing in step-by-step illustrations certain strokes common to many subjects. In Japanese brush painting virtually all subjects are taken from nature. You start by painting subject that have simple forms – bamboo, birds, fish – and soon become adept at handling more complex subjects – landscapes, buildings, the human form. You learn how to interpret actions and emotions as expressed in line, and discover a new way of looking at the world.
