The Anschluss: The Rape of Austria by Gordon Brook-Shepherd
Requirements: PDF Reader, 25.2 Mb
Overview: TWENTY-FIVE years ago Hitler made his first foreign conquest – the seizure of his old homeland, Austria.

Anschluss is the story of how in March 1938 Germany took over an independent country without a single shot being fired on either side. The essential business was conducted not on the battlefield, but on the telephone; the threat of brute force was merely in the background, and Hitler’s unopposed entry into Vienna proved his theory that in die face of Western irresolution, bluster and blackmail could carry the

day.

The fall of Vienna dissolved the dream world of the Versailles Treaty and began the long nightmare of the Nazi occupation of Europe. It was the first (and only bloodless) chapter of the Second World

War.

Gordon Brook-Shepherd has written a vivid account of the events of the Anschluss, placing them in their historical context. He has examined German,

British and Austrian archives and the testament given at the Nuremberg trials by Goring, Ribbentrop and other Nazi officials. He has also consulted, among others, surviving holders of responsible positions at the time of the Anschluss, Kurt von Schuschnigg,

the then Chancellor of Austria, Theodor von Hornbostel,

Political Director of the Austrian Foreign Office in 1938, and Lord Avon, who as Mr. AnthonyEden resigned from the Foreign Office three weeks before the crisis. To his task the author has brought

the same clarity of exposition and readability of style that distinguished Dollfuss and The Austrian Odyssey, and which make of Anschluss a narrative of sustained and absorbing interest.
