1. Dying to Help
Anna McColl became a psychologist because she wanted to help… Struggling with her own anxieties and silly rituals, she delves into other people’s problems to try and avoid facing things happening much closer to home.
However, not everyone is willing to accept help, and interference can soon breed resentment as Anna is soon to discover. Following a messy break, Anna seeks to distract herself by re-investigating the murder of a social worker Karen Plant. The sister of the convicted murderer comes to her for help and protests her brother’s innocence. Following his conviction for murder, he killed himself and she pleads with Anna to look into the case again.
Taking it beyond professional concern, Anna starts to delve into the facts behind the murder and starts asking a lot of questions. She also starts to notice strange signs in her house that she is not alone.
Convincing herself that she is overworked and imagining things, she continues to over-involve herself in cases, but things start to get more and more sinister as Anna receives threatening postcards and is certain that she is being followed. As things unravel, Anna starts to see the extreme lengths people will go to when they get desperate…
2. Feeling Bad
Anna McColl has been telling lies… She told her patient, Luke Jesty, that his violent fantasies were nothing to worry about. She told her boss that Luke was stable. And when the police called her, telling her that one of Luke’s friends had been killed, Anna lied to them as well. So when Luke goes missing, Anna must solve the case herself and get to the bottom of what really happened. Did Paula really fall into the path of traffic…or did Luke act out one of his own fantasies?
Luke’s parents are no help at all, but Luke’s brother Michael is only too eager to lend a hand. As Michael and Anna grow closer and Anna learns more of Luke’s past, it seems less and less likely that she will ever see her patient again. And more and more likely that he’s gone on the run…
3. A Crushing Blow
Psychologist and occasional police consultant Anna McColl needs a holiday… But murder never takes a vacation…
A middle-aged man is found bludgeoned to death in nearby Leigh Woods and psychologist Anna McColl is shocked at the violence of the crime. Little does she realize that she’s about to get involved in the case herself …
After delivering a set of psychology lectures, one of the attendees insists that Anna come around to his place and talk to his wife, Geraldine. Geraldine lives near Leigh Woods and after the murder found that she was too terrified to leave her house, an acute case of agoraphobia. Against her better judgement, Anna is drawn into Geraldine’s case. She has no connection with the victim, so why has the incident affected her so profoundly?
Anna agrees to visit with Geraldine while she is on vacation from her regular practice, so only for two weeks. If Geraldine isn’t cured in two weeks, she must find someone else to help her. Will Anna be able to help Geraldine in such a short window? Or will she find out that there is more to the murder in Leigh Woods than anyone thought?
