The Ancient Khmer Empire by Lawrence Palmer Briggs
Requirements: .ePUB reader, 32.0 MB
Overview: Based on more than 30 years of research, this monumental work traces the history of the ancient Khmers (Cambodians) on the peninsula of Indochina, as well as the development of their architecture and sculpture, of which the ancient capital, Angkor Thom, and its neighboring temple, Angkor Wat, were the culmination. As George Cœdès wrote in his review of The Ancient Khmer Empire, “the publication of Mr. Briggs’ book [marked] a date in historical studies on South-East Asia. For it is the first time that the already considerable body of research work relating to the history and archaeology of ancient Cambodia has been assembled, sifted, and brought within reach of the English-speaking public.”
The Ancient Khmer Empire is a source book of early Khmer civilization, covering its art and architecture during the Funan (first century to ca. 550) and Chenla (ca. 550-802) periods, culminating with the Angkor period (802-1432) when the sacking of the capital by the Siamese in 1431 effectively brought this culture to a close.
