The Aeternum Chronicles (1-3) by H.G. Chambers

Overview: I was born in British Columbia, Canada, but spent most of my youth on the beaches of Maui. Throughout my life, I’ve been fortunate enough to explore my passions. I’ve had harrowing experiences as a helicopter pilot, drying cherries in the desert mountains of Washington state. I’ve toured with a band down the eastern seaboard in a $2,000 van, surviving on Arby’s fixins, and selling CDs for gas money. I’ve built websites and designed logos for businesses all over North America. Of everything I’ve tried, writing fantasy is by far the most exciting and fulfilling. My whole life I have been fascinated by stories. Especially the kind of stories that transport you into incredible worlds where the impossible becomes real; where epic battles between good and evil rage across the centuries. This sense of escape and wonderment are what I hope to embody within my own work.
Genre: Fiction; Sci-fi/Fantasy
#1 – Recreance – Long ago, humanity conquered old age. But as lifespans grew, great wars erupted over dwindling resources, and humankind was brought to the brink of extinction.
In a merciless wasteland beneath the desert sun, the last bastion of civilization is ruled by Gabrial Penumbra, the Lightless Patriarch.
When Oren’s parents are murdered by the Patriarch’s forces, his world is forever changed. Escaping into the desert, he discovers a secret underground resistance where he trains under an enigmatic swordmaster. All the while, Oren never stops wondering what became of Clementine, the best friend he left behind.
In the two years following Oren’s disappearance, Clementine uses her talents to survive as a masterful thief. But when she agrees to a heist infiltrating the Patriarch’s defenses, she uncovers a secret so dangerous, she too must escape into the desert.
Now Oren and Clementine—estranged companions reunited by fate—must stand together against an ancient and powerful foe, or succumb and witness the fall of humankind.
#1.5 – The Gathering Mask – For young Clementine, life on streets has not been easy. Sleeping in warehouses and scraping by on petty theft has kept her alive so far, but deep down she knows that she is capable of so much more. Her convictions are put to the test when she receives a small envelope marked only with a red hourglass–the mark of the Watcher.
With this first test, Clementine is given an opportunity to prove that she is worthy of joining New Arcadia’s professional underground crime syndicate. She quickly learns, however, that few opportunities are given without predetermined outcomes. Will Clementine claw her way up from an impoverished life on the streets, or will she become a sacrifice to the Ministry authorities, rotting in an underground cell until her final days?
#2 – Vigilance
Sometimes, the void stares back…
The Aeternum Wars have begun anew. Ministry armies have spread like a pestilence across Illyria, wreaking chaos and destruction upon the last remaining outposts of those brave enough to resist.
Hunted by the same feral beasts that destroyed her town, Anzien Tsierig leads a squad of soldiers and untested recruits south along the Wyrewood. Their orders are clear: travel to the southern stronghold and prevent a mass slaughter. Will they find a town ready to defend, or a field of graves?
Across the Shattered Peak Mountains, Oren and Clementine search for a way to stem the tide of darkness. When they stumble upon a figure of legend, they must decide how much they are willing to sacrifice for a chance to save their world. The answer is one that will put their friendship, and perhaps their very souls to the ultimate test.
Humanity is once again pushed to the brink, and those who remain must unite, or be swallowed by the void.
#3 – Defiance – The void gathers, and shadows deepen.
The terrifying truth has finally been revealed—New Arcadia is a city-sized weapon, poised to destroy the entire planet. Now Oren, Clementine, Anzien, and Ryland must join forces and fight, if they hope to rescue the millions of civilians within New Arcadia, and stop the apocalyptic weapon from activating. But to do so, they must overcome not only their enemies, but also the demons within themselves.
Oren’s memories of Clementine have been burned away, leaving an empty chasm between them. Determined to melt his cold despondence, Clementine returns a precious gift he gave her long ago. Will it be enough to bring them together, or will the contradiction in his memories divide them further?
As the Ko’jin rebels prepare to march on New Arcadia, Anzien discovers that General Graves has been feeding her lies and cannot be trusted. With millions of lives in the balance, Anzien must make a choice—subvert the general’s plans and face charges of treason, or follow orders and risk trading one tyrant for another.
Ryland has finally begun to accept his role as the voice of the resistance. There’s just one problem: after his encounter with the Patriarch, he’s no longer sure that his mind is his own. Now, not even he can say with surety whether he will aid in the evacuation efforts, or sabotage them completely.
Humanity’s final hour approaches, and it appears all may be lost. Those who would fight must now band together in defiance if they hope to beat back the darkness, and save humanity from oblivion.
