That Nation Might Live: One Afternoon with Lincoln’s Stepmother by Jeff Oppenheimer
Requirements: .ePUB Reader | 291 kb
Overview: Sarah Bush Lincoln’s first gift to her stepson was suppressing her shock at the sight of him. At the end of her long wagon ride was her new husband’s son, as filthy as the frontier critters all around, and appearing hungrier than most. During the day his hands were blue with cold; at night he slept on a bed of leaves. At all hours he mourned the death of his mother.
Because of Sarah’s ability to create a harmonious blended family, and her stubborn defense of his intellectual pursuits, forty-one years later she said farewell to her son as the President-Elect.
On September 8, 1865, two people met who knew Lincoln better than anyone.
His longtime friend and law partner, William H. Herndon, interviewed Sarah in preparation for a biography of the martyred President. She tells Herndon the famed Life of Lincoln not as facts, but as ten stories. Herndon’s notes, as well as other firsthand accounts, provided an abundance of material to create an accessible, often authentic narrative with a bent for the grit of frontier life.
The setting is two rocking chairs in front of a well fed fire in Mrs. Lincoln’s prairie cabin home. The build up to The Civil War is woven into the aged woman’s recollections. Also within the context of the story, it is my honor to pay tribute to the strength of people who cannot move a muscle.
You are invited to pull up a rocking chair next to Abraham Lincoln’s Stepmother and enjoy her company for an afternoon.
