Overview: Tales From the Magic Kingdom is a set of compilations of short stories related to my Cinders-Embers-Ash books and consist of 3 sets:
1. Tales of the Mirrors
2. Tales of the Shoes
3. Tales of the Dragons
Genre: Fiction > Children/Young Adult Fantasy
Tales of the Mirrors (#1)
What if all mirrors were portals and wishes were like curses?
Tales of the Mirrors is a set of 5 short fairytale retellings:
To Thaw a Heart – a Snow Queen retelling with a Romanov curse;
To Make a Wish – a twisty mashup of Aladdin, Alice in Wonderland, Anastasia, the Frog Prince, Hans & Greta and other fairytales;
- To Kiss a Frog – the Frog Prince retelling;
To Kill a Beast – Belle’s jilted huntsman’s HEA;
To Cure a Curse – a Belle & Beast retelling.
Grizelda the witch from Cinders (aka Marina the Goddess of Fate from Charm) takes center stage in this set, meddling through the consequences of her wish. Belle and the vainest bachelor of the village make an appearance as well. You might remember the silver and bronze mirrors from Cinders, the iron one from Ash and the golden one from Charm. Or get introduced to them here.
Tales of the Shoes (#2)
What’s the price of magic?
Magical teleporting, to be precise.
Cinderella’s magic shoes. Could they be the same ones that the Wizard of Oz squirrelled away? Assuming they can change form. Who made them? From what?
And the most important question: why does everyone always assume magic shoes operate for free?
If you had to pay magic shoes for transporting you, would you rather give up a few life years or pay in blood?
And what – or who – do the mirrors and magic shoes have in common?
Tales of the Shoes is a sister set to Tales of the Mirrors and contains 5 short stories:
- To Shape a Shoe – the genesis story of the shoes AND the magic mirrors;
To Find a Way – about the Wizard of Oz discovering the shoes;
To Steal a Pair – a Cinderella sequel about Ella’s Godmother’s thievery;
To Get Revenge – about magic shoes on loan to other characters (previously in the Once Upon a Name anthology);
To Break a Bond – about the fate of magic shoes after they’ve gotten rather used to carnage.
Tales of the Dragons (#3)
How can you break a curse when the only remedy is an accidental True Love’s Kiss?
They say 7 mysterious princes rule the Dragon Realm. Nobody knows for sure. Their kingdom is hidden and access is by invitation only. Headcount per prince is…more than anyone should have, they say. Scales as black as their souls, they say. "They" say quite a few things. Including about an unbreakable curse plaguing the dragon princes, none of whom can find love.
But what if they could? What if accidental True Love’s Kisses could be orchestrated?
Read this enchanting last instalment in the Mirrors-Shoes-Dragons short story sets and find out.
The stories in this set include:
- To Snare a Prince – a Hans&Greta spin-off (previously in the Enchanted Forests anthology);
To Find a Queen – where dark elves try to prevent Greta’s rise to queendom (previously in the Twice Upon a Name anthology);
To Steal a Kiss – where Greta breaks the dragon curse (previously in the Enchanted Flames anthology);
To Host a Ball – a 12 Dancing Princesses retelling (previously in the Enchanted Skies anthology);
To Catch a Thief – a Rapunzel / Snow White mashup retelling (previously in the Third Name’s a Charm anthology).
