The people of Talamir have lived in isolation for two thousand years. Recently, they discovered a monster flourishing under the ground, causing quakes, and bleeding them of spior, the mysterious and invisible energy that gives all things life. Remnants of a past civilization constantly remind them extinction is possible.
A subset of people with the Talent can perform magic by moving spior between focal points. Drystn is a top student with this skill and has just graduated. The government drafts him, along with many like him, to stop the monster before it is too late. But Drystn uncovers a plot revealing ulterior motives.
