Overview: The world has changed. Walls; once the building foundation for houses, schools and more, are now a barrier that separate the good from the bad. To stop the bad from spreading a third kind of person had to be created. A Tag. A slave. It is the only way to keep Fortify intact, to make the people comply. Fortify has given us a clean and safe place to live, where there is no illness and no diseases.
My crime that I have not yet committed, is theft. I am labelled a thief because the Nobles foretold my future and saw me do it. Therefore, I must live my life by Laws that ensure I do not commit the atrocity. I am not even allowed a name, but I have one and they can’t take that away from me. My name is Hemberley, and I was born a Tag. In a weeks time I will turn seventeen, along with a million other Tags. On this day, we will be taken to see The Nobles for Selection and they will decide our future. Have I been a good Tag? I’ve tried, but trouble seems to follow me and on Selection Day they will see this. Only the morally pure that have been good will become Laws and live a life of luxury. The younglings, six-year-old Tags, will take over our duties until they are seventeen and so on. It’s a vicious cycle that has no end, or so I thought. Now, I am not the one thinking about going to the Outside, the Outside is coming to find me.
Tagging makes you a better person. To be Tagged is an honour…an honour for whom?
