Overview: Arthur Mitchell Ransome was born in Leeds in 1884 and educated in Windermere and Rugby.
In 1902, Ransome abandoned a chemistry degree to become a publisher’s office boy in London. He used this precarious existence to practise writing, producing several minor works before Bohemia in London (1907), a study of London’s artistic scene and his first significant book.
Today Ransome is best known for his Swallows and Amazons series of novels, (1931 – 1947). All remain in print and have been widely translated.
Arthur Ransome died in June 1967 and is buried at Rusland in the Lake District.

1. Swallows and Amazons (1930)
To John, Susan, Titty and Roger, simply being allowed to use the boat Swallow to go camping on the island is adventure enough. But soon they find themselves under attack from the fierce Amazon pirates, Nancy and Peggy. And so begins a summer of battles, alliances, exploration and discovery.
2. Swallowdale (1931)
John, Susan, Titty and Roger return to the lake for another summer of camping on their island with their old allies, the Amazon pirates. And then disaster strikes when they find themselves marooned ashore by the shipwreck of their boat. But if they can’t reach the island, there’s always the hidden valley of Swallowdale to discover…
3. Peter Duck (1932)
The Swallows and Amazons are sailing with Captain Flint when they hear a tale to set their pulses racing and hopes shooting sky high. Soon their boat is on its way to a Caribbean treasure hunt and they find themselves up against sharks, storms and the vilest of pirates.
4. Winter Holiday (1933)
When Dick and Dorothea meet up with the Swallows and Amazons, they’re soon swept into a wild adventure of polar expeditions, mountain rescues, blizzards, igloos, ice sailing and heroic work amidst the frozen wastes.
5. Coot Club (1934)
Tom Dudgeon has cast off a motor cruiser from its moorings to protect a coot’s nest, but now the cruiser is searching high and low for him – even offering a reward. Tom accepts an invitation for a week’s cruise to teach his new friends, Dick and Dorothea how to sail. You couldn’t get a better sailor than Tom but can he really stay one jump ahead of his pursuers long enough to complete the voyage?
6. Pigeon Post (1936)
Reunited for the summer, the Swallows and Amazons with Dick and Dorothea launch a prospecting expedition to find the lost gold mine of the high hills above the lake. But the mining camp runs into all sorts of trouble: not only the danger of fire in the drought ridden countryside but also scary encounters with unsafe tunnels. Worst of all is the sinister Squashy Hat, who appears to be a rival prospector and who’s certainly a spy – how can they keep working without him discovering what they’ve found?
7. We Didn’t Mean to Go to Sea (1937)
When John, Susan, Titty and Roger find themselves adrift in the treacherous waters of the North Sea, they’re suddenly having a real adventure and only their sailing skills can help them…
8. Secret Water (1939)
John, Susan, Titty and Roger, the crew of the Swallow, take on the job of mapping the mass of small islands round Pin Mill while living on the biggest one. But who are the mysterious savages who lurk in the islands – and is the tribal totem they find in their campsite a threat of attack?
9. The Big Six (1940)
Bill, Peter and Joe have been falsely accused of setting boats adrift and the whole river is against them. Only Dick, Dorothea and Tom are there to stand by their friends, and they soon set out to investigate the crimes and trap the real criminals.
10. Missee Lee: The Swallows and Amazons in the China Seas (1941)
The Swallows and Amazons have finally met a real pirate – the tiny, pistol-carrying Missee Lee, who has rescued them after their shipwreck off the coast of China. The only trouble is she wants to keep them… forever.
11. The Picts and the Martyrs: Or Not Welcome At All (1943)
The dreaded Great Aunt has invited herself to stay with Nancy and Peggy just as their friends Dick and Dorothea arrive for the Summer holiday. Nancy and Peggy have to become Martyrs, wearing dresses and reading poetry (but breaking out at night), while Dick and Dorothea become Picts, secret inhabitants of the country who must never let themselves be seen. It’s a desperate gamble to keep everyone out of trouble – but can it possibly work against the eagle eyes of the fearsome Great Aunt?
12. Great Northern? (1947)
Dick’s birdwatching discovery turns a pleasant cruise of the Hebrides into a desperate chase. Soon the Swallows and Amazons are busy dodging the savage natives and evading the ruthless pursuit of a fanatic egg-collector who’s determined to kill a pair of rare birds.
