With little notice the Sun releases a burst of gamma radiation aimed directly at the earth. At the speed of light the entire globe is enveloped in a cloud of lethal radioactivity. Anything and everything on the surface is pummeled with over 6,000 rads – enough radiation to kill a life form in a matter of minutes. Trees die, electronics burst into flames, animals fall down dead in their tracks, and humans die in their beds or drop to the ground where they stand. Only those fortunate enough to be underground survive unscathed. Thousands of others receive partial doses and suffer severe brain damage, dammed as half-deads, driven to roam the empty streets in packs as they search for food in whatever form it presents itself. A small group who came to LA to attend a conference survives the radiation blast by sheer luck. Most are ex-military. Once they understand the severity of the situation, they decide to escape Los Angeles and relocate north to a more remote and secure location. On the way they find other survivors who also want to escape the growing dangers that surround them. As they travel north, they quickly learn there are other survivors who respect nothing and choose to endure by taking advantage of the weak and defenseless.
