Overview: D. M. Mitchell has been compared to Ruth Rendell, Martina Cole, Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Linwood Barclay, Dickens and even the Bronte sisters! This wide array of writing styles is appropriate – though Mitchell is known for his psychological thrillers, he is determined that each of them will be different, so they might be set in different eras, may be straightforward thrillers or have a supernatural or horror twist, and he avoids like the plague the standard and unimaginative serial killer format! You’ll find he uses different styles of writing to suit different types of books – it also keeps him from getting bored…

THE SOUL FIXER: Susan and Paul Carmichael’s world is devastated when a small-time burglar and drug addict, Eddie Hull, brutally murders their only child, young student Becky Carmichael.
Consumed by grief, they both struggle to come to terms with their tremendous loss. Their fragile relationship under mounting pressure, Susan begins to have dreams about her daughter. She is convinced these are not ordinary dreams; Becky is calling out to her for help. But this revelation only serves to drive a further wedge between the grieving couple.
In desperation, Susan trawls a number of so-called psychics, but is bitterly disappointed by charlatans and fraudsters. Until she meets the mysterious Silas Blake.
He tells her things no one else knows about Becky. That Becky’s soul is trapped and cannot move on. That there is an island in the Hebrides called Connalough Point where they’ll fine help. Paul, naturally sceptical, agrees to go to the island for the sake of their marriage.
Connalough Point is a very secretive place, every precaution taken to ensure no one outside learns about it. Here they meet Helen Blake, Silas’s wife, and the dour MacLeod brothers. They also meet the soul fixer…
But slowly they discover the shocking secrets of Connalough Point, the real reasons they are there. With events spiralling down into deceit, terror and murder, it quickly becomes not only a battle for survival, but the steep path to a devastating truth…

THE WOMAN FROM THE BLUE LIAS:
Toby Turner stumbles upon the remains of a human skeleton, washed down from the cliff top by a recent landslip.
He runs a small bookshop in the quiet seaside town of Lyme Regis in Dorset. His life’s not quite on track, Toby takes a walk along the Blue Lias cliffs on Monmouth Beach to think things through, and here he finds the body of a woman who, it turns out, was murdered in 1978.
The gruesome discovery and the resulting media attention he receives would have been bad enough to cope with, but he soon thinks he’s being haunted by the woman from the Blue Lias.
What’s more, he finds himself falling in love with her, finding he is unable to live without her. His strange obsession starts to have a negative effect on his life and his health, which starts to deteriorate. In an effort to cure himself, he decides to try and solve the mystery of her death and why she chose him, of all people, to haunt and fall in love with, hoping by discovering what happened to her all those years ago they can both find peace. And so begins Toby Turner’s bizarre journey of discovery that will lead him into very dark and dangerous territory.
His search leads him to a hotel that used to stand high on the cliff, lost to a landslide in the 1980s, and to an old musician called Steely Jacobs who appears to be linked to the dead woman. But events take an unexpectedly disturbing turn when Toby discovers his best friend Mark has been secretly collecting information on a number of missing young women going back a decade or more. He learns about Mark’s secret past and how he was implicated in the murder of his teenage girlfriend. Is this tragic death connected to the list of missing young women? And what has their disappearance got to do with the body Toby discovered on the beach, a woman murdered thirty-five years ago?
