I took a moment to consider how close I was to triumph.
I had spent years—decades even—stalking the treacherous dragon that had decimated entire villages. Many thought I was a fool to hunt such a deadly foe—that I was just as likely to be turned to ash along with the thousands of unlucky villagers to cross the dragon’s avenue before me. I had no tears to shed for them, however, as I crouch alone along the path the dragon surely must take. It may take days, weeks, or even months to come face-to-face with my most deadly enemy. It was no matter.
I had hidden behind a deadly Assassin Bush while I stalked the dragon in the hot sun of the summer morning. The bush had six-inch long thorns, and the slightest brush against my skin would have meant instant death. The bones of some poor unfortunate fellow lay just on the other side of the killer shrub as a testament of its deadly prowess. From my hideaway behind the bush, I looked out in the morning light over the grassland and saw evidence of the dragon—dung piles—and knew she would revisit this area.
