Tom is an insufferable, misogynistic husband who thinks nothing of spending the weekend of his wife’s thirtieth birthday, in Paris with a woman he hasn’t seen since they last bumped into each other in the office stationary cupboard.
Of course where Tom is concerned, there is a reasonable excuse for such a betrayal? Top of the list being that it hadn’t been planned… it just sort of happened… men forget important dates like birthdays. After all, such lapses of memory are part of their genetic makeup, much the same as buying yet more clothes and yet another pair of shoes, are part of a woman’s. And anyway it wasn’t as though he forgot completely… he did have his secretary send her a ‘garage’ bunch of flowers and a small box of Diary Milk the day before he left on his business trip.
It’s only as he’s sat in the business lounge at Charles De Gaulle airport, that Tom remembers what it was that had bugged him all weekend… Rachel’s birthday. Filled with what passes for remorse in Tom’s world and fearing there might be a chilly welcome waiting for him on the doormat, he concocts an escape plan… a weekend away in Cornwall at the Atlantic View Hotel, with a meal Henri’s Bistro… a place filled with happy memories for Rachel and ‘poor’ ones for himself. But it would be a price worth paying for Paris and being allowed back into the marital bed.
Ultimately, the best laid plans end in tragedy and Tom’s disappearance… an event that has everyone baffled, even if some people do seem less concerned than might be deemed appropriate.
At the same time as Tom goes missing, hundreds of miles away in a small Scottish town, a stranger walks into a hotel and collapses into the arms of a young woman. Kept in an induced coma by doctors, when the man finally wakes up, he has no recollection of who he is or how he came to be there with such terrible injuries.
Unsure about everything, the stranger sets off on a long journey to recover his memory and find out exactly who he is and what sort of person he was before his ‘accident’.
Finally, at the end of a long and arduous personal quest, during which he discovers little about himself, except for the fact that he seems to unintentionally hurt those closest to him, he arrives in the Cornish village where he hopes that all his questions will be answered.
With all his enquires pointing him in the direction of the Atlantic View Hotel and the woman who is set to marry the owner, he gate-crashes the wedding hoping he will be able to lay to rest the ghosts of his past… but sometimes life and relationships aren’t as simple as painting by numbers… sometimes you take the wrong turn and end up looking into the abyss of regrets.
