Strange Places: Illustrating the Otherworldly in Mike Mignola’s Hellboy by Jennifer L. Anderson and Mike Mignola
Requirements: .PDF reader, 2.66MB
Overview: This 2007 thesis by Jennifer L. Anderson compares Mike Mignola’s comic book series Hellboy to the genre of a classic mythological hero’s tale in its literary as well as in its visual storytelling.
The thesis shows how Hellboy follows the storyline of the traditional hero but ultimately transcends it to create Mignola’s über-hero and compares the structure of the story to basic principles common to heroes. To this end, it juxtaposes Hellboy and the theories of Joseph Campbell as set forth in his famous work The Hero With a Thousand Faces.
