Requirements: .ePUB Reader, 1.6 MB
Overview: Alex Drevessa lives in central Missouri. She spent her formative years in Maryland and Utah, so split the difference and settled in a place extremely like and unlike both of them. She generally spends her time hiking, perfecting baking recipes, volunteering in her church, teaching her doubly-different children, accompanying a city choir, using libraries/museums/on-line resources to learn, writing sci-fi novels, and practicing law. In the last three years, she’s run a half-marathon down a mountain, dissected a starfish, and been the director of music for a high-school musical. She married far above her station, and is daily grateful for her husband’s intellect, compassion, and humor.
Genre: Science Fiction > Time Travel | Fantasy

1. Stasis
Stranded in Regency England with nothing but my apartment key, my watch, and a Taser. If only I hadn’t gone to that party.

I met a cute guy in a back room, and he actually talked to me. We discussed Zheng He, Plutarch’s Lives, and Einstein’s “little book.” But just when I started hoping he’d ask me out, he offered me a summer job.

I should’ve been suspicious Monday morning when the office door clanged shut behind me, locking me in a cylindrical metal room with a bunch of suited men and one grinning cowboy. I knew they were insane when the cute guy handed me a Taser and an embroidered handkerchief and told me my trial run would take place two hundred years in the past. I tried to leave, but the cute guy smiled, opened the door, and shoved me through an ellipse of blinding light.

2. Entropy
After an abysmal week of midterms, I take the bus to the office, ready to relieve the stress by working on my special projects to fix history. There was one out on the Great Plains in 1876. I’ll read it over, get the guys– I mean, those engineers of time and space– to open a gate for me, and when I come back, I’ll bask in the accomplishment of having made the universe a little better. Actually, I should do as many projects as I can while Evil Bob is still comatose on the floor. He could revive any moment, that is, assuming he isn’t dead. With him shut down, nothing should go wrong this time…

3. Entanglement
All the project goals are complete– even the secret one Thomas set up, the one that’s left me a wreck. But, the space-time gate still hasn’t opened. Back at the office, Steve ought to be bringing me home to the twenty-first century. He’s in a stasis field, so he can’t be asleep at the computers. Then why am I stuck here in 1830’s France, with Ben, the half-crazy physicist cowboy, and his entourage?

Okay, Ben is better than I thought. But his friends are a bunch of stuffy men, like that “Babbage” fellow, working on an invention he’s sure will change the world, or that John Herschel, who likes to pontificate on astronomy. It’s sad, knowing how misguided these guys are, and not being able to correct them without risking destroying our future.

We’re wasting time. We need to be preventing the horror Suzy-Q predicted, that Ben would watch his world go up in flames again, but this time, there’d be no one to stop it.

4. Incubation
Marcel was hiding on the stairs of his father’s Paris townhouse when a strange lady appeared. She confronted his father, and told him that she needed to take Marcel on a quick, easy trip to medieval Ireland to save some dragons. They dashed through the streets to Papa’s secret physics lab, where Papa confirmed the readings for the trip, then granted his permission for Marcel to go. Though hesitant, Marcel decided to take the leap with her through the space-time gate. But, soon after their arrival, they discovered that history had been altered, and their quest was far more dangerous than either had anticipated.
