Starlink satellites use advanced communication equipment to deliver high-speed, low-latency internet to users all over the world. Starlink satellites are mainly built and designed at a facility in Redmond, Washington State. However, SpaceX plans to build a new Starlink equipment factory in Austin, Texas. The company aims to produce up to 120 satellites per month.
Starlink user dishes use a quad-core processor equipped with Arm’s Cortex A53 cores, which are often found in entry-level smartphones. The processor is responsible for controlling the dish’s motors, antennas, heaters and other components.
Starlink satellites have gone through several versions since their first launch in 2019. The first version, called v0.9, had a mass of 227 kg and a single solar array. They also lacked inter-satellite links and collision avoidance systems1. Only 60 of these satellites were launched.
The second version, called v1.0, had a mass of 260 kg and a redesigned solar array. They also had improved antennas, thrusters, thermal control systems and collision avoidance systems. However, they still lacked inter-satellite links. More than 1,000 of these satellites were launched between 2019 and 2022.
