Overview: These novels largely take place on board Starbase 47, also known as "Vanguard", which serves as a support facility for a supposed colonization push by the United Federation of Planets into an interstellar expanse called "The Taurus Reach". While the station does in fact help colonies across the area, its true mission (known only to a few people) is to study a mystery that began with the discovery of genetically engineered DNA millions of times more complex than any previously encountered, known as "The Taurus Meta-Genome".

In its effort to understand the Meta-Genome, Starbase 47 has three vessels permanently assigned to it, the Constitution-Class cruiser USS Endeavour , the tiny Archer-Class USS Sagittarius, and the Starfleet Corps of Engineers starship USS Lovell. Another starship, the USS Bombay, was destroyed during the events of Harbinger. In addition to the mission, those who know of Vanguard’s true nature must also prevent others from becoming aware of the situation, especially the Klingon Empire and the Tholian Assembly, both of whom have interests in the region and are suspicious of the Federation’s presence.

Harbinger by David Mack (Star Trek: Vanguard #1)

The U.S.S. Enterprise is damaged after being the first ship to travel to the edge of the galaxy. They are traveling through the Taurus Reach and are surprised to find a new Federation facility, Starbase 47 A.K.A Vanguard. Captain James T. Kirk is puzzled at this place for many reasons, including it being so near the xenophobic Tholian Assembly. Kirk has his ship dock for repairs.

The Tholians, the Orions, and the Klingon Empire all believe there is much more to the establishment of this odd new starbase and there is.

Summon the Thunder by Dayton Ward & Kevin Dilmore (Star Trek: Vanguard #2)

The Taurus Reach: a remote interstellar expanse that holds a very old and potentially cataclysmic secret, the truth of which is feared by the Tholians, coveted by the Klingons, and dubiously guarded by the Federation. At the center of this intrigue is Vanguard, a Federation starbase populated by an eclectic mix of Starfleet officers and civilians, whose lives are forever altered as they explore the layers of mystery surrounding the Reach and steadily peel them away…one after another.

In the aftermath of Harbinger, Commodore Diego Reyes commands Vanguard while waging an intensely personal struggle, tasked to uncover the true significance of the Taurus Reach while simultaneously concealing that mission from his fellow officers – and even his closest friends. As the Daedalus-class U.S.S. Lovell brings some of Starfleet’s keenest technical minds to help, the U.S.S. Endeavour makes a find that could shed further light on the enigmatic meta-genome that has captured the Federation’s interest – if its crew survives the discovery….

Deep within the Taurus Reach, an ancient and powerful alien mind has awakened prematurely from aeons of hibernation, alerted to the upstart civilizations now daring to encroach upon the worlds in her care. With the stakes for all sides escalating rapidly, the alien lashes out with deadly force against the interlopers, propelling the Vanguard crew on a desperate race to understand the nature of the attacker, and to prevent the Taurus Reach from becoming a war zone.

Reap the Whirlwind by David Mack (Star Trek: Vanguard #3)

Reap the Whirlwind continues the story line of the previous Vanguard novel, Summon the Thunder. In this third installment, the investigation of mysterious star system leads to a downed ship, a collision of military forces, and a difficult decision that will shatter lives and careers. Reap the Whirlwind chronicles the race to solve an ancient mystery concerning a remote and unknown region of space, one that holds a highly coveted, mysterious, and potentially cataclysmic secret. At the centre of this intrigue is an eclectic mix of Starfleet and civilian protagonists unlike any crew previously seen in Star Trek, whose turbulent lives aboard are painted against the backdrop of an evolving storyline as the layers of the mystery are steadily peeled back, one after another.

Meanwhile, an unexpected defection brings a new perspective to the investigation, and Vanguard’s Lieutenant Ming Xiong is confronted with an artifact that could be the key to decoding the Taurus Meta-Genome.

But with Operation Vanguard teetering between its greatest breakthrough and a conflict that could engulf two quadrants, its future may depend on the man Starfleet has selected to replace Reyes as base commander: Admiral Heihachiro Nogura.

In fact, the only man who knows why Reyes is still alive is the one who arranged his kidnapping and faked his death – the enigmatic Councilor Gorkon.

All their fates, as well as the futures of three great powers, are linked by one thing: the mysterious Mirdonyae Artifact. And unless Doctor Carol Marcus and Ming Xiong can unlock its secrets in time, it might destroy them all.
