Overview: Halloween is a time of superstition and celebration that takes place between fall and winter. On October 31, people dress up in costumes and go door-to-door to collect candy. The Celts have a long history of celebrating Halloween by dressing up as ghosts, monsters, and other supernatural beings. During Samhain, when actual ghosts roam the streets, they do this to blend in. The holiday of Samhain was the inspiration for Halloween in the United States. Samhain is a Gaelic festival that marks the end of the harvest period and the onset of winter. The festival itself is a solemn one, as it is a time to remember the dead. In Gaelic, Samhain is pronounced as “sow-in.” Modern Halloween isn’t nearly as eerie as it once was. This is a time for the family to spend together. It is the season for trick-or-treating, costume parties, and other Halloween revelries.
