Speaking of Lust: the novella by Lawrence Block (Editor)
Requirements: ePUB reader, 1.1 Mb
Overview: This 21,000-word novella was written to anchor a collection of stories edited by Lawrence Block and published in 2001 by Cumberland Press. In 2008 it appeared alone as a small UK paperback. Aside from that, it has never been published.

Says the author: “This was something new for me—and something decidedly old-fashioned at the same time. In a format as old as The Decameron and Canterbury Tales, a group of archetypal characters sit at a card table and entertain each other with stories during their endless bridge game. The Soldier, the Policeman, the Doctor and the Priest share their experiences and knowledge, telling each other stories about lust and sexual desire, with only the dozing old man by the fireplace as audience.

“My original plan called for seven collections, and thus for seven novellas from me, one for each of the deadly sins. I wrote “Speaking of Lust” first, then followed it with “Speaking of Greed”—and there the project ended, because I just couldn’t get anywhere with the third novella, which was to be about wrath. And if I had somehow knocked off wrath, then what? Sooner or later I’d be facing gluttony and sloth—and my own gluttony and sloth led me to say, just a little reluctantly, the hell with it.”
